How to Give Your Home a Tuscany Touch

From your dining table to the bed, a touch of Tuscany to your home will give it the timeless look that we all dream of.

Redecorating your house to reflect your personality is often a matter of trial and error. It all starts with what are you comfortable having around the house. If you are naturally drawn to historic European castles, like to walk on worn hardwood floors in clacking footwear and can eat pasta for all your meals, maybe you would do better to pick a Tuscan style for your house design.

What is the Tuscany style of décor?
Tuscany is a region in Italy characterised by imposing architecture that infuses warmth in colour and intricacy in detailing. Tuscany style décor is usually suited to large homes, where there is ample scope for placing large furniture items like an 8- or 10-seater dining table, for example. The Tuscan style is never short of drama, so Tuscany-inspired décor is often as theatrical as it is exquisitely crafted. It speaks of an old world magnificence that endures through the ages.

Typically, Tuscany décor includes textures wall and surface finishes, intricate craftsmanship, wrought iron fixtures, and deliberately aged finishes to impart luxurious grandeur[1]. If you wish to add a Tuscan touch to your home, start by planning each room’s design and furniture.

Adding Tuscan touches to your home décor
All that is indulgent yet sophisticated – that is the essence of Tuscan décor. Though you may pick oversized furniture, there is no room for tackiness or commercial, mass-produced items. The Tuscan style is a throwback to the Italian countryside, speaking volumes about living in a natural setting and using (as far as is possible) naturally-sourced elements in all fixtures and finishes[2].

It is simple enough to envisage a Tuscan home for yourself. Start with these design elements in mind[3]:

·         Hardwood floors
·         Wrought iron accessories
·         Italian marble flooring in the bathrooms, on the mantelpiece, shelves, etc.
·         Shuttered wooden doors and windows

Now let’s come to the important matter of picking out furniture and finishes in a Tuscan style. Consider these points[4]:

·         The furniture not be shiny or look new. Tuscan furniture and finishes are all about warmth and a worn look (but not old and bedraggled). For instance, pick a dining table that has a hardwood finish and wrought iron legs and edges. Pick chairs to match your dining table, exactly to the last inch.

·         Hardwood floors: Especially those that are sturdy and easy to maintain are a hallmark of Tuscany décor. Pick a hardwood floor that has a burnt sienna or deep brown colour.

·         Marble tops: Another important feature of the Tuscan design is the marble tops. Your kitchen can have marble cooking and serving surfaces. Employ marble to good use in the bathroom and shower space as well.

·         Rough stone: These stones are also an integral part of Tuscan décor. Use it in the form of bricks to mark an arch in the house, or the door and window frames.
\
·         Comfort: Tuscan décor is all about lavish comfort. Pick chairs and couches with a large seat and a slightly reclining back, and with wooden armrests.

For all its charm, Tuscan-inspired décor is not that difficult to maintain. Regular dusting, polishing, and using the right detergents can help you keep your home spic and span.
