3 DIY ways to decorate your children’s bedroom

Your kids will love their new room – and you just need to follow these simple tips!

One of the most important rooms in the house is the children’s bedroom, but we scarcely give it enough thought when we’re designing the house.

It’s not enough to provide your children with a bed to sleep on and a study table in the corner. The room has to reflect their personality and look like their private sanctuary. Your children’s active imagination can convert their room into a castle, or a stormy sea, or a fortress! But it must be a room that allows their imagination to flow – and it must incorporate all that they love, in terms of design, functionality and colour.

But how do you decorate your children’s bedroom? We’ve got some easy DIY kids’ bedroom décor ideas from IKEA for you to consider:

1 Let them paint the walls.
The room belongs to your children, so it is always best to take their choices and likes into account before you start your redecorating. They will rebel – and loudly, too! – if you use colours and materials that they don’t like. So here’s an easy way to get around this fix: let them choose the base colour of the walls, and let them create art on the walls, too. An easy kids’ bedroom décor idea is to use washable lustre paint on the walls, and give your children watercolours (not acrylic colours or permanent markers) so that they may draw flowers, their favourite cartoon character or superhero, or whatever else they wish to adorn the walls with. Together, all of you will have so much fun decorating the walls – and the walls will look so pretty as well!

2 Have a theme of their choice.
Every room, whether a child’s bedroom or an adult’s room, has a design theme to go with. It could be a colour-based theme, or in the case of your children’s room, a character-based one. Here’s a good kids’ bedroom décor idea: they may have a favourite cartoon character or superhero character. They will appreciate wallpaper that depicts their favourite theme or a series of posters on the same. You can also get them bedsheets or drapes that depict these themes or colours.

3 Put up a large display case for their toys.

A common problem with most children’s bedrooms is that they quickly become messy with their toys and other things strewn all over the place. You might have given them a box or a separate cabinet to store their toys, but it becomes really difficult to get your kids to tidy up after themselves. Try an easy hack which doubles up as a creative kids’ bedroom décor idea: create a large display case for your children’s toys. It can be a large shelving unit which your children can reach, and you can also install a stepladder for them to climb the higher levels. Make sure the cabinet is well fastened to the wall so that it doesn’t tip over with pressure.
